Went to the party!

April 25th, 2009

Here’s the view from the balcony of my friend Sean’s apartment. He is always such a wonderful host! And when he has us to his place one of the highlights is always sitting out on his balcony and enjoying the interior view of the city. It’s amazing. Absolutely stunning. And it makes you feel like such a part of the city to be right there.

Happy Friday! I just got home from a modeling gig at the Swiss Army summer clothing line launch party, and I’ve got sparkling white wine, doritos, a snickers bar, and spaghetti and meatballs. Hmm… I also have a good friend that’s throwing a party, but it’s downtown, and I’m a good train ride away, and it’s already 10:30pm. And I’m exhausted. Do I want to go to his party, or drink my sparkling wine and chill out at home? I can’t decide! Meanwhile, my roommate is getting ready for the party and has happened into an outfit straight out of Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” music video. Complete with bun and high heels. smiley-02

Well, as I drink this bottle of wine and prepare for a Friday Night Decision, let’s ponder the fantastic musings of Robert Palmer. Cheers! -Eric M

EMI has disabled embedding of this music video. EMI: You SUCK.

I think YouTube user peterbob101 says is all: “Robert Palmer is the definition of cool.”

Aah. Lazy Sundays. I’m letting myself relax today, play stupid video games, and write  on my blog. Ever  since my dad gave me a slow cooker (or Crock-Pot, i’m not exactly sure what the hell it is) as a gift, I have enjoyed a new level of culinary freedom! Harmony (my roommate and best friend) has amassed all kinds of slow cooker recipes and I wanted to share one of my absolute favorites! It’s a Jambalaya recipe that she has tweaked, and man is it good! We kind of don’t measure when we make slow cooker meals, and every time we make it it’s a bit different, so this is an estimation of what we’re doing today. It’s about the simplest recipe in the world, and it tastes great! I hope you enjoy!

Harmony’s Sunday Jambalaya

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 16-ounce package kielbasa, cut into 4-inch rounds
  • 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 8-ounce box jambalaya, Spanish, or fiesta-flavored rice mix
  • 1 tablespoon Tabasco Sauce (or more, depending on your taste)
  • 1 whole medium/large onion, diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced

DIRECTIONS

  1. Put oil and kielbasa in the slow cooker and slow cook on high for 20 minutes
  2. Add tomatoes, Tabasco Sauce, and onions – slow cook on high for 3 hours (or longer depending on your preference)
  3. Add rice and garlic – slow cook on high for 45 minutes
  4. Set slow cooker to low and continue cooking for 2 hours
  5. Serve with sour cream and enjoy!

Bombs Away!

April 18th, 2009

Well, my extended weekend in Ohio was a nice get-away from the city for a bit. I think I may have eaten a bit too much chocolate (thanks, Easter Bunny) but all in all it was a very refreshing weekend. I’m glad to be back in the city though!

Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict I wasn’t able to do Cousins Grimm (which I am very sad about) but I did land a part in another fun musical! It’s a fun new work (yay!) that points fun at all the big Broadway musicals. It’s going up at Mary’s Attic (2nd floor of Hamburger Mary’s) this summer, which means I’ll most likely be drinking a lot, but it will get me back into being social again! I’ve been a little reclusive since my last show. smiley-03

I’m happy to be working with the Bailiwick Repertory Theatre again. They gave me my first role out of college (Thrill Me) and I also did the American Premiere of Jerry Springer: The Opera with them.

We start rehearsals soon, and it’s got a fabulous A-list Chicago cast! I think this is going to be a really fun experience; no deep character work here – just good plain old fashioned fun! See you at Mary’s Attic!

Talking to my friend Blitz right now and he mentioned that he watched 28 Weeks Later on my blog, and I realized that I haven’t posted the first movie yet! So, here is the first in the series: 28 Days Later. Enjoy, and don’t test dangerous and volatile chemicals on unsuspecting humans without taking the necessary precautions!

I’m spending the morning getting caught up with work before I head to the airport to fly to Ohio to visit my parents for the weekend for some rest & relaxation & wonderful-cooking-by-dad & pampering-by-mom FTW! victory

I got a 2nd callback for Cousins Grimm (woot!) this afternoon, so I’m also rehearsing for that. I’m going in to be videotaped so they can send us all to the NY writers for consideration. Wish me luck! I’ll be heading straight to the airport from the callback. I usually have my prescription Xanax for flights (I have panic disorder and I get attacks easily when I fly) but unfortunately I’m out this trip. Eep! I’m sure I’ll be fine though. Maybe I’ll throw a movie on my iPhone or continue reading The Host. Hopefully that book picks up soon.

I bought beer and cookies last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! Mmmm. And they were the crappy Chips Ahoy! cookies that I remember from being a kid. They’re so bad, yet so good!  greedy

I may do some micro-blogging this weekend if I get bored or something terribly interesting happens… maybe. I’ll probably just be enjoying myself and being lazy. Either way, I’ll see you when I get back!

Cheers!

Towards A More Equal Union

April 8th, 2009

3251_570759267177_48607109_33569101_3593843_njpg

This week it was announced that Iowa and Vermont will now recognize same-sex marriages (effective April 27, 2009 and September 1, 2009 respectively). That’s four as of this date: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Besides the obviously hilarious fact that Iowa is officially now more progressive than California, we are slowly moving in the right direction. THANK GOD.

It’s interesting to me that people often want to side with the popular vote when it comes to civil liberties. If we had always sided with the popular vote, we would not have made as much progress as we have. Supreme Court rulings (both on the federal and state level) have always been instrumental in defining progress in Women’s rights, minority rights, and so many other civil liberties throughout history. Thank you, wikipedia.

I personally don’t care what we call it. Call it marriage, call it civil union, call it whatever you want as far as I’m concerned. Hell, if we call it something else then the maybe social conservatives who are so concerned with the sanctity of marriage will go concentrate on their own marriages and leave us the hell alone. It sounds to me like all they want is the word, anyway. Give it to them. It’s not the prettiest word in the book, anyway. We’ll call ours A More Equal Union and I bet a lot less of us will take it for granted.

My good friends Nicki and Kara got married last weekend and are now starting their life together as partners, despite what the “popular opinion” is telling them. I am so inspired by their relationship with one another. They don’t take it for granted. They did it for the right reasons. And I think their wedding came with a really cool bonus too: The most beautiful “Fuck You” I’ve ever seen. Thanks, Nicki and Kara, for being two of my heroes. I remember being at the protest with you two, marching for hours in the cold with nothing more than coffee, signs, and freedom.

One of my favorite things to do as an actor is to work on new musicals. I love creating roles and getting to develop characters that haven’t been explored before. It’s absolutely exciting to me, and I honestly can’t think of anything that I would consider more creatively fulfilling. There’s nothing like the freedom of a role that hasn’t been done a thousand times before. Since I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2006 I have truly been fortunate enough to work on a number of new projects. My first show out of college was the Chicago premiere of Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story. That was an amazing experience. I got an unbelievable amount of press and was basically showcased in a 1-1/2 hour 2 man musical where I got to explore the mentality of a murderer manipulating his best friend, who is in love with him. Oh yeah, and he was a pyro too. It was so much fun! So terribly deliciously evil!

(NOTE: I am not responsible for the book.)

After Thrill Me, I was offered a part in another new musical: Toy Soldiers. This was a new self-proclaimed RENT-style musical that dealt with the consequences of the war in Iraq. At that time my brother had already been deployed to Iraq in the Army, and so this was a subject that was close to my heart and it was a story I was interested in telling. It was for a start-up theater company, so the experience wasn’t the most professional I’ve had, but I was able to find enough meat to sink my teeth into. I played the angry, revolutionary anti-war protester (in true Forrest Gump style) and spoke out against the war through his portrayal. After Toy Soldiers I was asked to be in the chorus of the American Premiere of Jerry Springer: The Opera. Oh, come on. This was an absolute blast, and while not very artistically hearty for me it was a hell of a lot of fun and just such an interesting project to be a part of.

I continued on to do Reefer Madness and Weird Romance, neither of which are new musicals but both are fun as hell and not done very often. After that I was glad to be a part of a very edgy production of Cabaret, in which I played Clifford Bradshaw, the unfortunate writer. Great role, often overlooked. I think that many directors fail to realize that while Sally is the leading lady of Cabaret, the story is Clifford’s and it is told through his voice. I rarely see that point of view being taken with productions, and I think that’s unfortunate. After Cabaret I was fortunate enough to land one of the four parts in a brand new musical, Jacques Brel’s Lonesome Losers of the Night. This was a collection of all new English translations of the famous (and not-so-famous) Jacques Brel songs, some of which had never been heard in English before. The translations were done by the brilliant Arnold Johnston, who is the only man authorized by the Brel estate to perform English translations of his work, and it was an absolute honor to be trusted with this work.

The lyrics were ingenious, deep, and more meaningful than most any other lyric set I’ve ever heard in my life. The press we received was astounding; the leading theater critic of  The New York Times came to see it. People from all over the world flew into Chicago to hear these specific English translations. Now, Jacques Brel is considered one of the greatest poets/songwriters of all time in France. His body of work is considered a masterpiece and is known for only being able to be performed accurately by Jacques Brel himself. I had a 60-year-old Frenchman who had seen Jacques Brel perform many times come up to me after the show and tell me that I did very nice work and that I “came close. Not quite, but close.” That was the most flattering and humbling compliment I have ever received from that show. I’ll never forget it. The experience was one in a lifetime, and truly proved to me once again why I love to be a part of new works of art.

(NOTE: This is the first recorded film of the English translation of this song. Cool, huh?)

I just auditioned for another new musical, Cousins Grimm, and I haven’t heard back from that yet. I would love to work on this project… I believe the characters are written to be a bit older than I am, but my goal at the callback was to change the director’s mind about that. I really want to sink my teeth into the lead character of this musical. Of course, all the characters in the show are fun and interesting and would be great to play. But we’ll see what happens! If not this time, the wonderful thing about new works is that they never stop coming! Especially in Chicago – The Greatest Theater City In America. Enjoy one of the great songs of Cousins Grimm and (whether I’m in it or not) be sure to check it out this summer with Bailiwick Repertory here in Chitown!
